Senate President Pro Tempore Win Gatchalian has called on his fellow senators to move past political divisions and focus on addressing the urgent concerns facing the country, emphasizing that the Senate must remain united and productive despite ongoing controversies.

Speaking during a press conference on June 4, Gatchalian said the chamber should prioritize its legislative and constitutional responsibilities instead of being consumed by political disputes that have recently dominated public attention.

The senator stressed that several important matters require immediate action, including the confirmation of five military generals who are nearing retirement. Any delay in the confirmation process could affect leadership transitions within the Armed Forces of the Philippines and other key institutions.

Gatchalian also highlighted the need for continued coordination between the Senate and the House of Representatives on pending measures awaiting legislative action. According to him, lawmakers must ensure that unfinished legislation does not stall amid political developments.

Another major concern raised by the Senate leader is inflation, which continues to affect millions of Filipino households. He said consultations with farmers, transport groups, and logistics operators are necessary to identify practical solutions to rising prices and supply chain challenges that contribute to higher costs of basic goods.

Because of these pressing concerns, Gatchalian said a special session of Congress may be necessary to address urgent issues that cannot wait until the regular legislative calendar resumes.

The call comes at a time when the Senate is facing leadership tensions and heightened political debate surrounding the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte. While these developments continue to attract public attention, Gatchalian emphasized that government institutions must continue functioning and delivering services to the Filipino people.

A veteran legislator, Gatchalian has built a reputation as an advocate for education reform, energy security, economic development, and local government modernization. Before becoming Senate President Pro Tempore, he chaired several influential Senate committees and played a key role in the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2), which has been pushing reforms to improve the quality of Philippine education.

He has also been active in crafting measures aimed at strengthening the country's energy sector, improving job creation, and promoting economic competitiveness.

As political debates continue inside and outside the Senate, Gatchalian's message reflects growing calls for lawmakers to focus on issues that directly affect Filipinos, including food prices, transportation costs, employment, and economic stability.

With several critical matters awaiting action, Senate leaders are expected to determine in the coming days whether additional sessions or legislative measures will be needed to address the country's most urgent concerns.
