Gilas Pilipinas is taking its preparations overseas as the national men's basketball team left for Brisbane, Australia on Tuesday for a weeklong training camp ahead of the next phase of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
Led by head coach Tim Cone, the squad will spend several days in Brisbane before travelling to New Zealand for its upcoming qualifier matches.
Before departure, Gilas held an open training session at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan, giving fans a chance to see the team in action. Cone said the camp will help the players adjust to the colder weather and maximize the facilities being provided by the Brisbane Bullets, one of the teams assisting in their preparations.
The national squad is also scheduled to play two tune-up games on June 28 and 29, including a matchup against the Brisbane Bullets, as part of its build-up for crucial road games against New Zealand and Australia.
Most of the 12-man roster joined the final workout, including newcomers Mike Philips, Justin Baltazar, Troy Rosario, and Juan Gomez de Liano, who was tapped to replace the injured Scottie Thompson. Kevin Quiambao was absent due to a personal matter.
Also making the trip are Justin Brownlee, RJ Abarrientos, Chris Newsome, June Mar Fajardo, AJ Edu, Carl Tamayo, and Dwight Ramos.
Gilas currently holds a 2-2 record in Group A and has already secured a spot in the next round of the qualifiers. The Filipinos will face New Zealand on July 3 before taking on unbeaten Australia on July 6 in what are expected to be key tests for the national team.
