Ginebra Eyes Awards Double As Abarrientos And Brownlee Lead Top Honors Race

Barangay Ginebra could have more than just the PBA Commissioner’s Cup championship to celebrate on Wednesday night as two of its biggest stars emerge as leading contenders for the conference’s top individual awards.

Rookie sensation RJ Abarrientos and veteran import Justin Brownlee are among the favorites for the Best Player of the Conference (BPC) and Best Import awards, respectively, which will be presented before Game 4 of the Commissioner’s Cup Finals between Ginebra and TNT Tropang 5G at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Brownlee appears to be in prime position to capture another Best Import trophy after topping the list of candidates with 50.5 statistical points. The Ginebra reinforcement is aiming for what could be his fourth Best Import recognition, further cementing his legacy as one of the league’s most decorated imports.

Not far behind is TNT’s Chris McCullough, who accumulated 49.3 statistical points despite joining the Tropang 5G midway through the semifinals as a replacement for the injured Bol Manute Bol. Rain or Shine import Jaylen Johnson sits third with 47.2 points, while Meralco’s Patrick Gardner rounds out the contenders with 44.7 points after also serving as a replacement import.

The race for Best Player of the Conference, meanwhile, remains wide open.

NLEX star Robert Bolick currently holds the top spot with 38.9 statistical points, followed closely by San Miguel superstar June Mar Fajardo with 38.6. Abarrientos is right behind them in third place with 37.2 points, keeping himself firmly in contention heading into the awards night.

What makes Abarrientos’ case particularly interesting is that he is the only player among the top five BPC candidates who managed to advance all the way to the Finals. Bolick, Fajardo, and Phoenix standout Ricci Rivero saw their campaigns end in the quarterfinals, while Terrafirma’s Jerrick Ahanmisi failed to reach the playoffs altogether.

The statistical rankings were finalized at the end of the semifinals, meaning performances in the Finals will not affect the outcome of the voting.

The final winners will be determined through a combination of statistical points, media votes, and players’ votes. Statistical performance accounts for 45 percent of the total score, while members of the media contribute 30 percent and players make up the remaining 25 percent.

With Brownlee leading the Best Import race and Abarrientos still in the hunt for the BPC award, Ginebra fans could be in for a memorable night before the opening tip of Game 4, as the Gin Kings look to bring home both individual honors and move one step closer to another championship.
