At least 17 people have died as the southwest monsoon (habagat), intensified by Typhoon Inday, continued to bring heavy rains and flooding across parts of the country, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
In its latest report on Saturday, the NDRRMC said around 514,700 people have been affected by the bad weather. The reported fatalities were linked to drowning and landslides, with two deaths recorded in Bukidnon, 10 in Malapatan, Sarangani, and five in Calanogas, Lanao del Sur.
The agency also reported four injuries caused by landslides in Torrijos, Marinduque; Malapatan, Sarangani; and Calanogas, Lanao del Sur. Meanwhile, nine people remain missing, including three from Malapatan and six from Calanogas.
More than 14,000 families have been displaced by the weather disturbance, with nearly 2,900 families currently staying in evacuation centers.
The government has so far provided around PHP16.41 million worth of assistance to affected families, the NDRRMC said.
While Typhoon Inday exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility at 8 a.m. on Saturday, the weather bureau said Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 remains in effect over Batanes, the Babuyan Islands, and the northern portion of mainland Cagayan as of its 11 a.m. advisory.
