House Panel Moves To End Travel Tax While Securing Funds For Tourism And Education

The House is taking a major step toward making travel cheaper for Filipinos. On Monday, the House Committee on Tourism, led by Eleandro Jesus Madrona, approved a measure that consolidates 18 bills aiming to abolish the travel tax.
But lawmakers are clear — the tax won’t disappear without a plan to keep funding the programs that depend on it. From tourism projects and cultural initiatives to scholarships for students, they’re working to ensure these programs stay supported even if departing passengers no longer pay the P1,620 to P2,700 fee.
The move now sets the stage for further discussions on sustainable funding alternatives as the measure aims for approval by June 2026 under the LEDAC priority list.
