The House prosecution panel said the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte is ultimately about seeking accountability for the Filipino people, whom they described as the real victims in the case.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, House prosecution spokesperson and Kabataan Rep. Renee Co said the public has long been waiting for answers regarding the Vice President's alleged use of confidential and intelligence funds, as well as other allegations included in the Articles of Impeachment.

According to Co, funds that could have been spent on classrooms, scholarships, education, and healthcare should be properly accounted for. She said many questions surrounding the confidential and intelligence funds remain unanswered, making the impeachment trial an important opportunity to address those concerns.

Co also referred to allegations of unexplained wealth, saying the prosecution wants the proceedings to determine the facts behind claims involving billions of pesos that allegedly moved through the Vice President's accounts. She stressed that the goal of the trial is to establish accountability and deliver justice to the Filipino people.

Her remarks came in response to Vice President Duterte's recent "bloodied but unbowed" statement as the impeachment trial entered the evidence presentation stage. Co said that while the Vice President is free to describe her situation as she sees fit, the prosecution believes the real concern is the public's demand for answers on how government funds were used.

The House prosecutor expressed hope that the Senate impeachment trial would finally provide a venue where both the prosecution's evidence and the Vice President's defense can be heard in full, allowing the public to better understand the issues beyond procedural arguments.

Co said the proceedings should help bring clarity to lingering questions about the alleged misuse of public funds and the leadership issues raised in the impeachment complaint, adding that the Filipino people deserve a complete explanation before the case reaches its conclusion.
