The House prosecution panel remains confident that the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte are moving forward as planned, despite reports of disagreements during the initial pre-trial conference.

Speaking in a radio interview on Sunday, House trial spokesperson and Assistant Minority Leader Renee Co said the prosecution welcomed the successful conduct of the pre-trial conference and expects the remaining stages of the process to proceed according to the Senate impeachment court’s timetable.

Co said the next step involves the marking of evidence related to the remaining Articles of Impeachment, including issues concerning alleged unexplained wealth and the use of confidential and intelligence funds. She expressed hope that these procedures would be completed within the schedule set by the Senate.

Under the current calendar, both parties have until June 25 to conclude pre-trial proceedings. The prosecution panel is also hoping that the Senate impeachment court will issue its pre-trial order by that date to help guide the next phase of the case.

Addressing reports that the first pre-trial conference became tense, Co said disagreements between opposing sides are expected in legal proceedings of this nature.

She explained that pre-trial conferences are designed to identify contested facts, review evidence, and determine which issues still need to be argued during the actual trial. Differences over factual stipulations, she noted, are a normal part of the process.

According to Co, both sides were directed to submit their respective comments to help the impeachment court determine which facts are agreed upon and which matters remain disputed and must be addressed during trial.

She added that witness presentations were already discussed during the first day of the pre-trial conference, while the remaining evidence-marking activities are expected to continue as scheduled.

Co said the anticipated pre-trial order will play a crucial role in streamlining the proceedings by identifying facts already admitted by both parties, reducing the need for additional proof and helping avoid unnecessary delays.

The lawmaker emphasized that the prosecution panel remains focused on ensuring accountability while respecting due process, noting that the public has been waiting for the proceedings to move forward.

With the formal impeachment trial set to begin on July 6, the House prosecution team continues to prepare its witnesses, evidence, and legal arguments as it readies its case before the Senate impeachment court.
