The House of Representatives has once again ordered a 60-day suspension against Cavite 4th District Rep. Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga after lawmakers voted 238 in favor, 10 against, and 9 abstaining during the plenary session on Wednesday, February 4.

This marks Barzaga’s second suspension in just over two months, coming only days after completing his earlier 60-day penalty that ended on January 30.

Why Was He Suspended Again?

According to the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Barzaga continued to engage in conduct that violated House rules during his first suspension period. The panel cited several controversial social media posts, including remarks involving fellow lawmakers, public figures, and comments about the late Rep. Romeo Acop.

The committee said these actions showed “continued defiance” and undermined the dignity of Congress.

Ethics chair Rep. JC Abalos warned that further misconduct could lead to harsher penalties—including the possibility of expulsion.

Barzaga’s Response

Despite the overwhelming vote against him, Barzaga appeared unbothered. He even voted “no” on the motion for his own suspension.

Shortly after, he posted:

“Ok lang na isuspend nila ako, kahit expulsion pa nga... Basta ayusin na ng Kongreso ang ating ekonomiya, sobrang mahal na ng bilihin ngayon, ang liit pa ng mga sahod.”

The congressman emphasized that the nation’s pressing economic problems matter more to him than the disciplinary actions he faces.

What Happens Next

Under the suspension order, Barzaga is barred from participating in plenary sessions, committee hearings and official legislative work

He will also receive no salary or allowances for the next 60 days.

The back-to-back suspensions have sparked debate within the House, with some lawmakers stressing the need to safeguard institutional integrity, while others warn about potential overreach in regulating members’ speech and social media activity.

This latest action underscores the growing tensions in Congress over conduct, accountability, and responsible online engagement among elected officials.
