Senator Imee Marcos has formally asked President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to temporarily relieve several top officials of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) following the alleged siege and firing incident inside the Senate premises on May 13.

In a letter dated May 14, Senator Marcos expressed “serious concern” over reports that NBI agents allegedly fired shots within the Senate compound, saying the incident sparked public alarm and raised questions about Senate security and accountability among law enforcement officers involved.

Marcos urged the President to place the officials under temporary relief pending the outcome of a “full, impartial, and independent inquiry.”

Among those named in the letter were NBI Director Atty. Melvin Matibag, NBI-National Capital Region Chief Atty. Emeterio Dongallo Jr., and NBI-Organized and Transnational Crime Division Chief Atty. Jerome Bomediano.

The senator said temporarily removing the officials from their posts would help protect the integrity and credibility of the investigation and prevent any appearance of undue influence.

She also pointed to what she described as inconsistent public statements from NBI Director Matibag regarding the incident.

According to Marcos, Matibag earlier claimed that NBI personnel were only at the Sequoia Hotel for a fellowship, despite reports and videos allegedly showing agents inside or near Senate premises during the incident.

“These conflicting accounts make it all the more important that the investigation proceed free from any perceived interference,” Marcos said in the letter.

The incident has since triggered public attention online, with calls for a clearer explanation on what exactly transpired during the alleged operation near the Senate complex.
