The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has ordered the 30-day preventive suspension of a passenger jeepney after a dashcam video showing a passenger being thrown out of the vehicle due to reckless driving went viral.
The incident happened on June 23 and involved a jeepney bound for Cubao.
LTFRB Chairperson Vigor D. Mendoza II said the agency immediately identified the operator of the jeepney, bearing plate number APA-4905, based on information from the viral video and promptly issued a preventive suspension order.
“Public utility vehicles are neither built nor approved to operate for car racing. As PUV drivers it is always incumbent upon you to prioritize the safety of your passengers at all times,” Mendoza said.
He reminded public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers that passenger safety should always be their top priority, adding that operators are also responsible for ensuring their vehicles are roadworthy and that they do not employ reckless drivers.
The LTFRB also issued a show cause order directing the operator to explain in writing why the jeepney's authority to operate should not be suspended or canceled over the incident.
According to the agency, the alleged violations include failure to provide safe, reliable, and convenient public land transportation service and employment of a reckless driver.
A hearing has been scheduled on July 14, during which the LTFRB will also discuss the condition of the passenger who fell from the jeepney and determine whether assistance was extended after the incident.
“We will not tolerate this kind of reckless behavior of the driver and will make sure that he will learn his lesson from this incident,” Mendoza said.
The LTFRB also directed the operator to surrender the jeepney's license plate, require the driver to undergo a mandatory drug test and road safety seminar, and submit the vehicle for a roadworthiness inspection.
The agency warned that failure to comply with the show cause order could result in additional penalties, including a P5,000 fine and the possible revocation of the jeepney's franchise.
Mendoza also thanked the netizen who uploaded the dashcam video, saying it helped the LTFRB act swiftly on the incident. He likewise encouraged the public to continue reporting road abuses so the agency can immediately investigate and take appropriate action.
