Sen. Joel Villanueva called on Filipinos to put unity and public service above political divisions as the country grapples with economic challenges and continuing tensions in the Senate.

Speaking before members of Jesus Is Lord Church Worldwide, the senator acknowledged the political upheavals that followed leadership changes in the Senate on May 11 and June 3, developments that have triggered intense public debate and widespread speculation online.

Villanueva said many Filipinos have been asking where senators stand amid the controversy, noting that lawmakers have found themselves at the center of heated political exchanges.

Despite the turmoil, he stressed that his decisions remain guided by truth, justice, and service to the Filipino people. Addressing fellow members of the church founded by his father, Bro. Eddie Villanueva, the senator admitted that the past few months had been difficult and that leaders are sometimes faced with choosing what is right rather than what is convenient.

According to Villanueva, his accountability ultimately rests not only with the people but also with God.

The senator also pointed to pressing national concerns, including rising fuel prices linked to tensions in the Middle East, the weakening peso, increasing prices of basic goods, and the continuing need for stable jobs for Filipinos.

He lamented that the ongoing political impasse has disrupted the Senate's normal work and emphasized that Senate employees should not be caught in the middle of partisan disputes. He said lawmakers must continue focusing on measures that directly benefit the public.

Villanueva assured the public that senators would carry out their constitutional duties should President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. call Congress into a special session.

“Tutuparin po natin ang ating sagradong tungkulin sa ilalim ng ating Saligang Batas. We will be there.”

He said priority measures during such a session should include funding for disaster relief, rehabilitation and recovery efforts, the passage of pending legislation, and action on appointments awaiting confirmation, including those involving officials of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Villanueva urged Filipinos to look beyond political differences and instead focus on helping those in need, saying that public service and the welfare of the nation must remain the country's highest priorities.

He ended his message by reaffirming his commitment to protecting democratic institutions and serving the Filipino people, declaring that he would continue to stand for God and country.
