Kanlaon Volcano Erupts: Classes Suspended, Residents Urged To Stay Alert

Kanlaon Volcano erupted moderately today, sending a dark gray ash plume soaring 2,000 meters into the sky. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the eruption at the summit crater occurred at 4:39 PM and lasted for two minutes. Pyroclastic flows reached up to one kilometer down the southern and southwestern slopes.

PHIVOLCS maintains Alert Level 2 over Kanlaon Volcano, warning that entry into the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone remains strictly prohibited.

In response, La Carlota City Mayor Jose Luis Jalandoni has ordered the immediate suspension of all classes, public and private, at every level—including colleges and evening programs—effective immediately and continuing tomorrow, February 20. “The health and safety of students, faculty, and school personnel is our absolute priority,” the city government said, noting that an Executive Order will formalize the directive.

Civil Defense Philippines reiterated the volcano’s Alert Level 2 status, reminding communities in Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental to stay vigilant against hazards such as ashfall.

Philippine Red Cross Chairman Dick Gordon also emphasized the need for caution. “Residents within the identified danger zones are strongly advised to remain alert and follow instructions from local authorities. Stay away from the Permanent Danger Zone, wear face masks or cloth protection due to ashfall, secure water and food supplies, and monitor updates from the PRC,” he said.

Authorities continue to closely monitor the situation as the volcano remains active. Residents are urged to heed warnings and prepare for possible ashfall in nearby barangays.
