Lacson Says Senate Funds And Preparations In Place For Possible VP Trial

Sen. Panfilo Lacson says the Senate isn’t just watching from the sidelines—it’s ready.

The Senate President Pro Tempore and chair of the Senate Accounts Committee said the chamber is financially prepared for a possible impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, if and when the Articles of Impeachment are transmitted by the House.

According to Lacson, there’s at least ₱27 million allocated under the 2025 General Appropriations Act for the purpose. So far, only about ₱500,000 has been spent—used when the earlier Articles of Impeachment were transmitted to the Senate.

That leaves a significant balance still available. And because the fund falls under continuing appropriations, Lacson explained, it remains usable for up to two years.

In short, he said, the Senate is “able and ready” to proceed with the trial once it officially lands on their table.

Beyond the budget, Lacson shared that preparations have already been quietly underway. He and his colleagues, including Senate President Vicente Sotto III, have been getting ready in case the process moves forward this year.

Still, Lacson made it clear that if the trial pushes through, his decision will come down to one thing: the evidence.

He also had a reminder for fellow senators—should they end up sitting as senator-judges, they must carry themselves with the proper conduct expected in an impeachment court.
