International stage and screen star Lea Salonga will be honored with the MIFF Icon Award at the 2026 Manila International Film Festival (MIFF), recognizing her decades of excellence in theater, music, film, and her lasting impact on the global entertainment industry.
The announcement was made by MIFF organizers ahead of the festival's third edition, which is set to take place from September 3 to 6, 2026, in Hollywood. The award celebrates Salonga's groundbreaking career and her role in opening doors for Filipino and Asian performers on the international stage.
Salonga first gained worldwide recognition after winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as Kim in Miss Saigon, becoming the first Asian actress to receive the honor. She later became known to millions as the singing voice of Princess Jasmine in Disney's Aladdin and Fa Mulan in Mulan, while continuing to build an acclaimed career on Broadway, London's West End, television, concerts, and film.
According to MIFF, Salonga's achievements embody the festival's mission of celebrating Filipino excellence and strengthening the connection between the Philippine and Hollywood entertainment industries.
The 2026 Manila International Film Festival will once again be held in Hollywood, featuring screenings of Filipino films, industry forums, and a gala honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to cinema and the arts. Organizers said the event aims to showcase Filipino storytelling and talent to a global audience.
Salonga's recognition comes as she continues to receive international acclaim for her contributions to the performing arts. She was recently named among the honorees for the Hollywood Walk of Fame Class of 2027, making her the first Filipina to receive the distinction.
Over a career spanning more than four decades, Salonga has remained one of the Philippines' most celebrated performers and cultural ambassadors, inspiring generations of artists while bringing Filipino talent to audiences around the world.
