Luistro Awaits Sara's Answers To Impeachment Charges

As Vice President Sara Duterte prepares to submit her answer to the impeachment complaint against her, House lead prosecutor Gerville Luistro said the public is expecting direct responses to the allegations that have hounded the vice president for years.
Speaking during a press conference on Monday, Luistro said the House prosecution panel hopes Duterte’s filing before the Senate impeachment court will go beyond procedural and constitutional arguments and finally address the accusations contained in the articles of impeachment.
“We will be welcoming the answer of the vice president. Remember, ang mga allegation of offenses in the current articles of impeachment is almost similar to the allegation of offenses in the articles of impeachment in the 19th Congress,” Luistro said.
“Suffice it to say, ang tagal na po na naghihintay ang taumbayan ng kasagutan ng ating bise presidente,” she added.
The impeachment complaint accuses Duterte of alleged misuse of confidential funds, unexplained wealth, bribery, and grave threats. According to Luistro, these allegations are not new, making her response highly anticipated.
“For us, itong araw na ito, finally, makikita na natin ang kasagutan ng ating bise presidente,” she said.
Luistro recalled that during previous impeachment proceedings and House Justice Committee hearings, Duterte's camp focused largely on constitutional and jurisdictional issues instead of directly answering the allegations.
“Let us recall that during the Justice Committee proceeding, wala po tayong nakuhang responsive answer to the allegations of offenses. Those which were alleged in their answer are all constitutional issues which are still pending before the Supreme Court,” Luistro said.
Because of this, the prosecution panel is hoping for a more substantive response this time.
“We are hoping for a different answer,” the lead prosecutor said.
“Ang gusto po sana natin, which I believe ito rin ang inaasahan ng taong bayan, ‘yung mismong kasagutan sa usapin ng threat, kasagutan sa usapin ng misuse ng confidential fund, kasagutan dito sa usapin ng unexplained wealth and non-disclosure to SALN, at ‘yung kasagutan din sa usapin ng bribery,” she added.
Luistro said the prosecution team is prepared to file its reply within five days after receiving Duterte’s answer, as required under the Senate impeachment rules.
