President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday welcomed a series of new agreements signed during the official visit of Paraguayan President Santiago Peña to Malacañang, describing the move as a major step toward stronger ties between the Philippines and Paraguay.
Speaking during a joint press conference, Marcos said discussions between the two leaders focused on expanding cooperation in key sectors such as agriculture, renewable energy, trade, and investment. He noted that both countries are looking at long-term economic opportunities that could benefit businesses and industries on both sides.
According to the President, one of the priorities raised during the talks was increasing awareness among Filipino and Paraguayan companies about possible business partnerships and investment opportunities.
Marcos also pointed to the growing potential for Philippine seafood exports—including tuna, sardines, and milkfish products—to enter the Paraguayan market, saying this could help open new opportunities for local producers and exporters.
Part of the visit included the signing of several agreements aimed at strengthening economic and diplomatic relations. Among them was a Memorandum of Understanding between the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Paraguay’s REDIEX to encourage stronger commercial cooperation and investment linkages.
The two governments also signed a visa waiver agreement for holders of ordinary passports, a move expected to make travel easier for tourists, business groups, and officials from both countries.
Another agreement focused on diplomatic cooperation, with the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs and Paraguay’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs signing a deal on mutual training and exchanges for diplomats.
During their meeting, Marcos and Peña also discussed developments in their respective regions, including the Philippines’ upcoming chairmanship of Association of Southeast Asian Nations in 2026 and Paraguay’s leadership role in MERCOSUR.
Marcos expressed hope that Peña’s visit would pave the way for a deeper partnership between the two nations, saying both governments now have the responsibility to sustain the momentum of their growing relationship.
Peña arrived in the Philippines on Sunday for a two-day official visit, marking the first presidential visit between the Philippines and Paraguay since diplomatic relations were established in 1962.
