Marcos: Camago-3 Boosts Malampaya, Helps Stabilize Power Supply
via Bongbong Marcos
MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said a newly developed gas well in the Malampaya gas field could help support a more stable power supply for Filipino households in the coming years.
In a recent statement, Marcos highlighted the completion of the Camago-3 well, which has undergone drilling and testing and is now contributing additional gas to the Malampaya facility—one of the country’s most critical energy sources.
“Camago-3 is now delivering new strength to the Malampaya gas field, extending its life and securing our own supply of power. This is energy we control. Energy that shields the Filipino people from rising fuel costs beyond our shores. We will keep the lights on in every Filipino home,” the President said.
Located offshore Palawan, Malampaya supplies natural gas to power plants that generate a significant share of Luzon’s electricity. However, its reserves have been declining over the years, raising concerns about long-term energy security.
According to the President, the addition of Camago-3 is expected to help extend the operational life of the gas field, potentially adding several more years of production. This could mean more locally sourced energy for homes and businesses and reduced exposure to volatile global fuel prices.
“Mas abot-kaya at mas matatag na suplay ng kuryente para sa bawat Pilipino,” Marcos said.
The Department of Energy has emphasized the importance of developing new wells to sustain Malampaya’s output, as the country continues to rely heavily on imported fuel.
Energy experts note that while additional supply from Camago-3 may help stabilize the grid, electricity prices will still depend on a range of factors, including global fuel costs and the country’s overall energy mix.
With power demand continuing to grow—particularly in Luzon—the government is looking at projects like Camago-3 as part of a broader strategy to ensure a more secure and diversified energy supply.
For now, officials say the added gas output is a welcome boost as the country works to manage rising demand and maintain grid stability.
