President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has tapped trade diplomat Dita Angara-Mathay as the new secretary of the Department of Tourism, a move Malacañang says signals a stronger push to link tourism with economic growth.
The announcement, made Friday by the Presidential Communications Office, described Angara-Mathay as a seasoned public servant with decades of experience in trade, investment, and global economic engagement.
Her appointment, officials say, is part of the administration’s broader plan to transform tourism into more than just a cultural showcase—but a major driver of jobs, businesses, and regional development.
“With her appointment, the administration aims to better align tourism with economic growth—attracting more investments, supporting local industries, and making sure benefits reach communities across the country,” the PCO said.
Angara-Mathay takes over from former Tourism chief Christina Frasco, who has been reassigned as Presidential Adviser for Sustainable and Resilient Communities.
Before stepping into her new role, Angara-Mathay served as Commercial Counselor at the Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Tokyo, where she worked closely with Japanese industries—one of the Philippines’ key sources of investment, technology, and tourists.
Throughout her career, she has led initiatives aimed at turning international partnerships into real opportunities on the ground—boosting local industries, supporting small businesses, and expanding opportunities for Filipino enterprises.
With her at the helm, the government is looking to position tourism as a key engine of inclusive growth—bringing not just visitors, but tangible economic gains to regions nationwide.
