President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed into law Republic Act No. 12317, resetting the schedule for the first regular elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and amending a key provision of its governing law.

The measure revises Section 13, Article XVI of Republic Act No. 11054, or the Bangsamoro Organic Law, which provides the legal framework for the region’s political structure and transition.

Under the new law, the first regular election for the Bangsamoro Government will be held on the second Monday of September 2026, extending the transition period for the region’s current leadership.

The law also sets a long-term election schedule to align BARMM polls with national and local elections. Beginning in 2031, regular Bangsamoro elections will be conducted on the second Monday of May, and every three years thereafter.

BARMM was established following the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law in 2019, marking a key milestone in the government’s peace process with Moro groups.
