President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. welcomed German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Malacañang on Tuesday, as both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening relations and promoting a rules-based international order.
Steinmeier’s visit marks a historic milestone, becoming the first German head of state to visit the Philippines in 63 years.
During their bilateral meeting, Marcos expressed optimism about expanding cooperation between the Philippines and Germany across a wide range of areas, including security, trade, climate action, maritime affairs, and other key sectors.
The President noted that both countries share similar views on many of today’s pressing global issues and face common concerns regarding international peace, stability, and development.
“We look forward to discussing the many areas of cooperation between our two countries, both bilaterally and in multilateral engagements,” Marcos said.
For his part, Steinmeier emphasized the strong alignment between Manila and Berlin on major international concerns, particularly in defending international law, the United Nations, and the rules-based global order.
Despite the long gap since the last visit by a German head of state, Steinmeier said the two countries remain closely aligned on important global issues.
The German leader also revealed that his trip was initially scheduled for March but had to be postponed because of developments in the Middle East and temporary airspace closures in parts of the Gulf region.
According to Malacañang, discussions between the two leaders are expected to cover defense cooperation, peacebuilding efforts, maritime collaboration, trade and investment opportunities, renewable energy, climate change initiatives, and people-to-people exchanges.
They are also set to exchange views on regional and international developments affecting both countries and the broader Indo-Pacific region.
The visit comes as the Philippines continues to deepen its engagement with European partners, particularly in promoting maritime security and upholding a rules-based international order.
