Manila Electric Company (Meralco) brought together animal welfare advocates, government officials, and community partners for a special event promoting responsible pet ownership and compassion for animals.

The activity, titled “Malasakit Fur All: Meralco CATropa and kaBARKada,” was held on March 13 at the company’s headquarters in Pasig City as part of its 123rd founding anniversary celebration. More than 150 employees, advocates, and partners attended the event, which also coincided with Rabies Awareness Month.

Among the speakers were Congressman Brian Poe, Senator Francis Pangilinan, and Professor Laureen Velasco of De La Salle University, who shared insights on strengthening animal welfare advocacy and protection.

In his keynote speech, Poe stressed the need for stronger laws to protect animals.

“I’m championing animal welfare in Congress, we are going to pass, hopefully, the Revised Animal Welfare Act. There are those of us in Congress who care or listen, who will get this law passed with your help,” he said.

Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe Zaldarriaga said partnerships are key in advancing animal welfare and promoting public safety.

“March is observed as Rabies Awareness Month, a time to strengthen public awareness about responsible pet ownership, vaccination, and humane population management. Through initiatives like this, we take meaningful steps toward preventing rabies while addressing the challenge of stray animal homelessness in a humane and sustainable way,” he said.

The event also featured activities such as a TNVR and vaccination program for community cats, a pet adoption drive, a pet fashion show, and storytelling sessions for the children of Meralco employees.
