The Philippines is set to enter a new phase in automotive manufacturing as Mitsubishi Motors Corporation moves forward with plans to produce hybrid vehicles locally.

The company announced it will establish hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) production through Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation at its existing plant in Santa Rosa—a move seen as a major boost to the country’s manufacturing and clean energy goals.

“This is a landmark investment that will redefine the future of our automotive industry. And the even more exciting possibility is that we could be an exporter of hybrid cars,” said Finance Secretary Frederick D. Go.

The investment was reaffirmed during a meeting at Malacañan Palace, where President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Go met with Mitsubishi Motors President and CEO Takao Kato.

Officials say the move signals strong confidence in the Philippine economy, while also accelerating the localization of advanced vehicle technologies. The initiative is expected to support the country’s push for cleaner transportation and higher-value industrial output.

Mitsubishi is also exploring the possibility of exporting hybrid vehicles produced from its Laguna facility, potentially positioning the Philippines as a regional manufacturing hub.

By producing HEVs locally, the country could reduce its reliance on imported fuel and lower emissions in urban areas. The plan also aligns with the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act, which promotes the adoption and development of electric and hybrid vehicles.

Economic planners highlight that investments like this are especially crucial during uncertain times, as they create jobs and open new opportunities in emerging industries.

Meanwhile, the Board of Investments is finalizing the Electric Vehicle Incentives Strategy (EVIS), which will be submitted to the Fiscal Incentives Review Board for approval. The program aims to attract more investors and strengthen the country’s position in the growing electric vehicle market.

With global demand shifting toward greener mobility, the Philippines’ entry into hybrid vehicle production marks a significant step toward a more sustainable and competitive future.
