ROXAS CITY, Capiz — A veteran radio broadcaster in Roxas City survived a shooting incident early Monday morning after unidentified gunmen opened fire on his vehicle while he was on his way to work, according to reports from media groups and police authorities.
The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (National Union of Journalists of the Philippines) condemned the attack and called for a swift investigation into the incident involving broadcaster Jay Lavapiez.
Based on initial accounts, Lavapiez was driving his SUV around 5:45 a.m. in Barangay Cagay, Villa de San Lorenzo, when he noticed two men on a parked motorcycle along the highway.
As he approached the area, one of the suspects allegedly signaled the other before gunfire was directed at his vehicle.
Lavapiez managed to escape the attack by maneuvering his vehicle and speeding away. Reports said he later stopped and positioned his SUV partly off the roadside, apparently to assess damage and distance himself from the attackers.
The assailants fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Lavapiez was not physically injured but was reportedly shaken by the incident.
The Philippine National Police in Roxas City has launched an investigation to identify the suspects and determine the motive behind the attack. Authorities have also said they are considering all possible angles, including whether the incident was related to Lavapiez’s work as a broadcaster or other personal and legal matters.
Media groups noted that Lavapiez and his wife, fellow broadcaster India Lavapiez, have previously faced cyber libel complaints filed by local officials, although investigators have not confirmed any link between those cases and the shooting.
The NUJP strongly condemned the attack, saying it highlights continuing risks faced by journalists in the country and urging authorities to identify not only the gunmen but also those who may have ordered the assault.
Investigators are currently gathering witness statements and reviewing possible surveillance footage in the area to help track down the suspects.
Authorities have not yet released a confirmed motive, and the case remains under active investigation.
