NUP Unlikely To Back Sara Duterte Impeachment

One of the largest political blocs in the House of Representatives has weighed in on the renewed impeachment discussions involving Vice President Sara Duterte — and for now, it’s signaling hesitation.
The National Unity Party (NUP) released a statement saying it has taken note of the fresh talks surrounding impeachment proceedings against the Vice President. But the party made it clear: impeachment is not a political weapon, nor should it be used to rehash issues that have already gone through extensive public scrutiny.
According to NUP, impeachment is a solemn constitutional mechanism meant to enforce accountability at the highest levels of government. It must be grounded on solid, material evidence — not repetition of matters already examined in previous inquiries and hearings.
At this point, the party said it has not seen any new and substantial evidence that would justify moving forward.
Unless compelling information emerges during the hearings that significantly changes the factual basis of the complaint, the NUP said it will most likely not vote in favor of the impeachment measure. Still, the party emphasized it will not pre-judge the process and remains open to reviewing any new evidence presented.
Beyond the legal arguments, the NUP also raised a practical concern: time and priorities.
The party stressed that Congress must focus its institutional resources on urgent national issues — including economic stability, public safety, and the everyday welfare of Filipinos. An impeachment process based on previously tackled matters, it warned, would inevitably consume significant time and attention from both chambers.
Despite its current position, the NUP said it remains committed to assessing developments objectively and in accordance with the Constitution and the rule of law. The party also expressed confidence that the House Committee on Justice will handle the proceedings responsibly and judiciously.
The statement was signed by Secretary General Reginald S. Velasco.
As the impeachment discussions unfold, the position of major political blocs like the NUP could prove decisive in determining whether the complaint gains traction — or stalls before it gathers the numbers needed to move forward.
