The Philippine music community is grieving the loss of veteran musician Abraham "Bing" Austria, who died after spending more than a week in intensive care battling sepsis. He was 62.
Austria's family announced his passing on Monday, saying that after days of fighting for his life, the beloved artist had finally been freed from pain. They also thanked everyone who extended financial assistance and support during his hospitalization, saying the outpouring of help gave him "a fighting chance." Funeral and memorial service details have yet to be announced.
Widely regarded as one of the pillars of the local ska, reggae, soul, and funk scene, Austria left an indelible mark on Original Pilipino Music through his work with pioneering bands Put3ska and Tropical Depression. He later became the frontman of mod outfit Juan Pablo Dream before founding Flippin' Soul Stompers, earning admiration for his infectious energy, distinctive style, and genre-blending sound.
Many fans consider "Nice Place," one of Juan Pablo Dream's most beloved songs, as among Austria's signature tracks. In announcing his death, his family made an emotional reference to the song, saying he had been "sent off by his family and loved ones to a nice place," a line that resonated deeply with longtime followers of his music.
Just days before he was hospitalized, Austria released "Bomba!," which many now regard as his swan song. According to reports, he wrote the track while stuck in traffic on his way from Bicol to Manila, describing himself as feeling "like a bomb about to explode." The song's upbeat sound and spoken-word style reflected the creativity and joy that had long defined his artistry.
Over a career that spanned several decades, Austria helped shape the country's independent music scene as a keyboardist, singer-songwriter, and performer. His work seamlessly fused ska, reggae, soul, and funk, influencing generations of musicians and cultivating a loyal following.
Following news of his death, tributes poured in from fellow artists, friends, and fans, many remembering him as one of the most colorful and influential figures in OPM's alternative music community. Though Bing Austria's voice has fallen silent, the music he created and the generations of artists he inspired are expected to keep his legacy alive for years to come.
