PH, Iran Expand Energy Talks, Seek Safe Oil Passage

The Philippines and Iran have stepped up bilateral engagement with a focus on energy cooperation and maritime security, officials said following a high-level meeting in Manila.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro met with Iranian Ambassador to the Philippines H.E. Yousef Esmaeilzadeh, alongside Energy Secretary Sharon Garin, to explore ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the energy sector.
In a post, Lazaro said the discussions build on previous talks during the Political Consultations held in November 2025. She noted that both sides are committed to expanding cooperation across multiple areas, with a strong focus on energy.
Officials also discussed efforts to support the Philippines’ energy security, including ensuring the safe passage of Philippine-flagged vessels through key maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, a vital channel for global oil shipments.
The meeting underscores Manila’s continued engagement with Tehran as both countries look to deepen diplomatic and economic ties, particularly in areas that support development and energy stability.
