PH Secures Safe Passage In Strait Of Hormuz After Iran Talks

The Philippines has received assurances from Iran that Filipino vessels and seafarers will be allowed safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, following a high-level phone call between top diplomats today, April 2.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi to strengthen bilateral ties and address maritime concerns critical to the Philippines.

During the conversation, Araghchi assured that Iran will allow the safe, unhindered, and expeditious passage of Philippine-flagged vessels, including energy shipments and Filipino seafarers, through the vital shipping route.

Lazaro welcomed the development, emphasizing its importance to both national security and the welfare of overseas Filipino workers.

The assurance is seen as a major boost for the Philippines, which relies heavily on oil imports from the Middle East. With tensions in key global shipping lanes often affecting supply chains, the commitment from Iran is expected to help stabilize the steady flow of oil and fertilizer into the country.

Officials say the agreement also reinforces protections for thousands of Filipino seafarers navigating the region, many of whom play crucial roles in global maritime trade.

The call ended on a positive note, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to stronger diplomatic relations and the pursuit of peace through continued dialogue.
