Members of the Makabayan Bloc and their supporters launched a rally Sunday in support of the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, insisting that the case is about public accountability and not partisan politics.
Leading the gathering were ACT Teachers Rep. Antonio Tinio, Gabriela Women's Party Rep. Sarah Jane Elago, Kabataan Rep. Atty. Renee Louise Co, who urged Filipinos to support the constitutional process and reject claims that the impeachment effort is merely political maneuvering.
In a joint statement, the group said the impeachment proceedings are necessary to hold officials accountable for alleged corruption and misuse of public funds. They argued that government money should instead be directed toward basic services such as education, healthcare, housing, and social welfare programs.
The bloc stressed that the issue goes beyond politics, saying corruption directly affects ordinary Filipinos, especially during difficult economic times. According to the group, every peso allegedly lost to corruption is money taken away from struggling families, teachers, workers, and underserved communities.
The lawmakers also rejected accusations of political bias, saying their calls for accountability apply to all officials regardless of political affiliation.
They maintained that both the Marcos and Duterte camps should face scrutiny whenever allegations involving misuse of public funds arise.
The Makabayan bloc pointed to allegations involving confidential funds, transparency issues, and supposed irregular government expenditures tied to the vice president. According to the group, these are serious matters that deserve a full and fair investigation.
During the rally, speakers called on the public to remain vigilant and actively participate in demanding accountability from government officials.
The group also appealed to Congress to continue the impeachment process without delay while ensuring fairness and thorough examination of the evidence.
As political tensions continue to rise ahead of the expected House vote, the Makabayan bloc said the public must make its voice heard and show that abuse of power and corruption should no longer be tolerated.
