Senator Bam Aquino has expressed condolences over the deaths of Ateneo de Manila University student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili, while also pushing for a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
In a Facebook post, Aquino extended sympathy to the families, friends, teammates, and the wider community of Ateneo de Manila University, describing the incident as a painful loss not only for the school but also for families who entrust institutions with the safety and well-being of their children.
He emphasized the need for a thorough inquiry into what happened during the off-campus activity, noting that it is important to determine whether existing laws, safety protocols, and school regulations were properly followed.
Aquino also raised concerns about accountability mechanisms in school-organized activities, particularly in reporting serious incidents and enforcing safety standards during training, sports, and team-building events outside campus.
According to him, the goal of the proposed investigation is not only to uncover the truth but also to ensure that lessons are learned and reforms are put in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The deaths of Baterbonia and Adili have sparked broader public discussion on student safety in athletic programs and institutional responsibility in supervised activities.
