Senate Sets June 18 Pre-Trial In Sara Duterte Impeachment Case

The Senate impeachment court has scheduled the pre-trial conference for the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte on June 18, a key step that will help determine how the proceedings will move forward.
According to House prosecutor Terry Ridon of Bicol Saro Party-list, the notice was issued on June 9 and signed by Acting Senate President and Presiding Officer Win Gatchalian. The conference is set for 9 a.m. at the Sen. C.M. Recto Room in the Senate.
Both Vice President Duterte and the House prosecution panel have been directed to attend either personally or through their legal representatives.
During the pre-trial conference, both sides are expected to discuss and clarify several matters, including agreed facts, disputed issues, documentary evidence, witnesses, and the schedule for the presentation of evidence during the trial.
The impeachment court has also required both parties to submit their pre-trial briefs by June 15. These documents must contain a summary of admitted facts, proposed stipulations, issues for resolution, and a list of available witnesses and evidence.
The notice further states that parties planning to present additional witnesses or evidence later in the proceedings must disclose relevant details at least three days before their presentation. However, certain witness identities may be withheld until they testify for security and safety reasons.
To encourage open discussions and streamline the process, the pre-trial conference will be conducted behind closed doors.
“The Pre-Trial Conference proceedings shall not be open to the media or public,” the notice stated.
The impeachment court also warned that parties who fail to submit their pre-trial briefs on time or fail to attend the conference without a valid reason could lose the opportunity to present certain evidence or witnesses. The court may also proceed with drafting the pre-trial order based on the records already available.
The June 18 conference is expected to establish the framework for the impeachment trial, identify points of agreement and disagreement between both sides, and set the timetable for the next stages of the proceedings.
