President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the Philippines' commitment to international law as he called for the South China Sea to remain a place of peace, cooperation, and connectivity instead of conflict.
Speaking at the diplomatic reception marking the 10th anniversary of the 2016 Arbitral Award, Marcos stressed that disputes in the South China Sea should always be resolved peacefully through dialogue and in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the rules-based international order.
“The South China Sea must never be an arena of conflict. It must remain a sea of peace, cooperation, and connectivity.”
The President said the landmark arbitral ruling represents more than a legal victory for the Philippines. He noted that it continues to protect the rights, livelihoods, and dignity of Filipino fisherfolk and coastal communities while reinforcing the country's vision for a peaceful and stable South China Sea.
Marcos also thanked the Philippines' international partners for their continued support in upholding international law, saying their backing strengthens efforts to preserve a rules-based global order.
“The rule of law is a great equalizer of all nations,” the President said, as he urged the international community to work together in the years ahead to protect vulnerable communities, safeguard the world's oceans, and build a more secure and peaceful future.
