After seven conferences without a championship, the Gin Kings finally reclaimed PBA glory on Wednesday night, defeating TNT, 88-76, in a winner-take-all Game 7 of the Commissioner’s Cup Finals at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Backed by a roaring crowd of 24,617 fans, Ginebra completed a long-awaited return to the championship stage, securing its first title since winning the Commissioner’s Cup in January 2023.
The victory was particularly sweet for the Gin Kings, who had suffered three Finals defeats since their last championship — all at the hands of TNT. This time, however, coach Tim Cone’s squad turned the tables and dethroned the defending champions.
Import Justin Brownlee once again delivered when it mattered most, finishing with 30 points and 14 rebounds. The veteran star erupted for 16 second-half points as Ginebra erased a seven-point halftime deficit and dominated the final two quarters.
Brownlee credited the team's passionate supporters for helping push the Kings over the top.
"These beautiful fans gave us the energy to go out there and win," he said after the game. "TNT gave us a battle, but we kept believing this was our time."
The championship marked Brownlee’s seventh PBA title, further cementing his legacy as one of the league’s greatest imports.
Meanwhile, Scottie Thompson earned Finals MVP honors after another all-around performance in the deciding game. The Ginebra star finished with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists, capping off a stellar Finals campaign that earned him recognition from the PBA Press Corps.
Thompson’s leadership and consistency throughout the series proved crucial as Ginebra finally overcame its longtime Finals tormentor.
Rookie guard RJ Abarrientos also played a key role in the victory, contributing 13 points while capturing the first PBA championship of his young career.
TNT came out strong and held a 47-40 lead at halftime behind import Chris McCullough, who scored 28 points. Jordan Heading added 21 markers, while RR Pogoy chipped in 15.
But Ginebra seized control in the third quarter and never looked back, outscoring TNT down the stretch to complete the comeback and bring the Commissioner’s Cup trophy back to Barangay Ginebra.
For the Gin Kings and their loyal fans, the wait is finally over — and with Scottie Thompson lifting the Finals MVP trophy and Brownlee leading another championship run, Ginebra's journey back to the top is complete.
