Thousands of mourners gathered in Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, on Wednesday to bid farewell to basketball standout Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia, whose life and achievements inspired not only the sports community but also countless young Filipinos across the country.
Family members, relatives, friends, teammates, supporters, and residents from different parts of Mindanao filled the Municipal Gymnasium for the funeral Mass before joining the emotional procession to Barangay Labnig Memorial Cemetery, where the young athlete was laid to rest.
The long convoy that accompanied Baterbonia on his final journey reflected the immense impact he had made in his hometown and beyond. Many walked alongside the procession, offering prayers and paying tribute to a player remembered for his humility, faith, and determination.
Among those who paid their respects were Agusan del Sur Governor Santiago B. Cane Jr. and First District Representative Alfelito M. Bascug, who visited the cemetery while preparations for the burial were underway. Provincial officials said Baterbonia's legacy extended far beyond his accomplishments on the basketball court and would continue to inspire future generations of AgSurnons.
Baterbonia rose from humble beginnings in Barangay San Nicolas, Talacogon, and became one of the country's brightest young basketball prospects. A beneficiary of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), he dreamed of using basketball to help his family and create a better future.
His talent brought him national recognition after leading the Davao Region to its first-ever basketball gold medal in the 2025 Palarong Pambansa, where he was named Most Valuable Player. He later played for Ateneo de Davao University and eventually earned a spot with the Ateneo Blue Eagles.
The promising athlete died earlier this month along with fellow student-athlete Divine Adili during a team-building activity in Aurora, a tragedy that shocked the sports community and prompted investigations by several government agencies.
In the days following his death, tributes poured in from athletes, coaches, schools, government officials, and ordinary Filipinos who had been inspired by his story of perseverance and success. The provincial government of Agusan del Sur later honored him as an "AgSurnon Sports Icon" and retired his No. 2 jersey in recognition of his contributions to sports.
For many residents of Agusan del Sur, the farewell for Baterbonia was more than a funeral. It became a celebration of a life that touched countless people and a reminder that his legacy will continue to live on through the dreams he inspired and the values he embodied.
Though his playing days ended too soon, the memory of "MVP Bobet" remains alive in the hearts of the people he inspired and in the generations of young athletes who hope to follow in his footsteps.
