Welsh music icon Bonnie Tyler, the powerhouse voice behind the timeless hits "Total Eclipse of the Heart," "Holding Out for a Hero," and "It's a Heartache," has died at the age of 75.
Tyler's family confirmed that the Grammy-nominated singer passed away Wednesday night at a hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she had been receiving treatment for an illness.
In a statement, her family said they were heartbroken by her passing and asked for privacy as they mourn their loss. A more detailed statement is expected to be released in the coming days.
Her death came just weeks after signs that her condition had been improving. Tyler had been hospitalized in May after suffering a perforated intestine that required emergency surgery. She was later placed in a medically induced coma as doctors worked to stabilize her and was reported to have regained consciousness in June before her health unexpectedly deteriorated.
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, Tyler first found success in the late 1970s with It's a Heartache. She achieved worldwide superstardom in 1983 with "Total Eclipse of the Heart," the dramatic power ballad written and produced by Jim Steinman that topped charts around the world and became one of the defining songs of the decade.
She followed that success with another enduring anthem, "Holding Out for a Hero," featured in the 1984 film Footloose, cementing her place as one of the most recognizable voices of the 1980s. Throughout her career, Tyler earned three Grammy nominations, represented the United Kingdom at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, and continued touring and recording music well into her seventies.
In recognition of her decades-long contribution to music, Tyler was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2022.
Following news of her death, tributes poured in from fellow musicians, celebrities, and fans around the world, many remembering Tyler for her unmistakable raspy voice and the timeless songs that defined a generation.
