The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has deployed teams to assess the damage following the collapse of the Kaliwet Bailey Bridge in Barangay Nalasin, Santo Domingo, Ilocos Sur.
According to initial findings, the bridge gave way after a 20-ton 10-wheeler truck crossed it—well beyond its 5-ton load limit.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said personnel were already stationed in the area managing traffic flow along the temporary bridge, which currently serves as a detour while construction of a permanent bridge is underway. The new structure is expected to be completed within the month.
In response to the collapse, the District Engineering Office has finished embankment works to open a temporary access route that can accommodate up to 20 tons. The route is now passable, helping ease traffic disruptions in the area.
Under the President’s directive, authorities are moving to hold the truck operator accountable for the incident.
The DPWH also reminded motorists to strictly follow load restrictions, stressing that these limits are in place to prevent accidents and ensure public safety.
Further updates are expected as the assessment continues.
