A growing number of seasoned lawyers and prominent law firms are offering to join the prosecution team in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, according to House lead prosecutor and Batangas Rep. Gerville Luistro.

Speaking during Kongreso Ngayon @ Your Service on dzME, Luistro said the House panel is having a difficult time narrowing down the list because many of those volunteering are highly experienced trial lawyers.

She shared that several names have already been shortlisted, but discussions are still ongoing as more legal experts continue to express interest in helping the prosecution team.

Luistro said the goal is to form a lean but capable roster of private prosecutors who can assist the House panel during the Senate impeachment proceedings.

According to her, the selection process goes beyond courtroom experience. The panel is also weighing each lawyer’s familiarity with the allegations in the impeachment complaint, as well as their availability throughout the expected lengthy trial.

She explained that once the impeachment court finalizes the schedule of hearings, prosecutors will need lawyers who can fully commit to attending the proceedings from start to finish.

The 11-member prosecution panel includes lawmakers such as Akbayan Party-list Chel Diokno, Mamamayang Liberal Party Leila de Lima, Manila 3rd District Joel Chua, and several other members of the House of Representatives.

The Senate has already convened as an impeachment court following the formal transmission of the Articles of Impeachment against Duterte by the House.

The complaint accuses the Vice President of allegedly misusing confidential funds, accumulating unexplained wealth, engaging in bribery, and issuing threats against top government officials.
