The Department of Health (DOH) is reminding Filipinos to stay informed about Hantaviruses, a group of viruses commonly transmitted through rodents such as rats.
The advisory came following reports from the World Health Organization that, as of May 7, 2026, several cases of the Andes virus — a type of Hantavirus — were recorded among passengers aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius, which sailed from Argentina to islands in the South Atlantic.
Despite the reported cases, the DOH assured the public that all 38 Filipino crew members onboard the vessel are safe.
Health officials also emphasized that there are currently no confirmed Hantavirus cases in the Philippines.
The agency said the country’s borders continue to be closely monitored through precautionary measures implemented by the Bureau of Quarantine.
According to health experts, Hantaviruses can spread through exposure to rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. Symptoms may appear weeks after exposure and can include fever, vomiting, headaches, and body pain.
The DOH also reminded the public to maintain cleanliness in homes and surroundings, properly store food, and use protective equipment when cleaning areas possibly contaminated by rats.
The WHO continues to classify the global risk of Hantaviruses as low while international health authorities closely monitor developments.
