Rice Prices May Approach P60-P62 Per Kilo By September, DA Warns

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has warned that rice prices in the Philippines could climb to as high as ₱60 to ₱62 per kilo by the next harvest period in September, depending on market conditions.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the possible increase is driven largely by higher production costs, particularly the rising price of fertilizer and other farm inputs that continue to strain local farmers. He noted that current retail rice prices are averaging around ₱50 per kilo in many markets, though levels may vary depending on region and rice type.

During a Senate hearing on agriculture concerns, the DA chief explained that many farmers are still adjusting to alternative fertilizers and cost-reduction measures being promoted by the government, which has affected overall production efficiency and expenses.

The DA stressed that the projection is not fixed but a scenario based on current cost trends. It added that interventions are already being implemented to help stabilize rice prices, including programs aimed at lowering production costs, improving farm support, and increasing supply efficiency.

The agency also said it is closely monitoring rice supply and market movements to help prevent sudden price spikes that could significantly affect consumers, especially low-income households that rely heavily on affordable rice as a daily staple.
