Ridon To Sara: Show Up, Face Impeachment
FILE
A House leader is calling out Vice President Sara Duterte to personally face the allegations against her, instead of responding through statements and social media posts.
Terry Ridon, chair of the House Committee on Public Accounts, had a blunt message for the Vice President and her legal team: stop talking from the sidelines and appear at the impeachment hearings.
“Tama na ang daldal, magpakita kayo,” Ridon said, challenging Duterte to attend both the final House hearing and a possible Senate trial.
Ridon’s remarks come as Duterte has repeatedly skipped the ongoing proceedings led by the House Committee on Justice, opting instead to release statements online criticizing the process, the witnesses, and the evidence presented.
Among the most controversial findings discussed in the hearings are the alleged non-disclosure of cash and bank deposits in Duterte’s Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALNs) for six consecutive years, and about P6.7 billion in covered and suspicious transactions flagged by the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) from 2006 to 2024.
Lawmakers have pointed to what they see as a major inconsistency: large financial transactions passing through accounts linked to the Vice President, yet no corresponding amounts reflected in her SALNs.
Despite repeated invitations from the justice panel, Duterte has not appeared to directly respond to the accusations.
Her spokesperson and legal counsel, Michael Poa, has defended her filings, saying all assets—including cash and bank deposits—were declared, but categorized under the general label “Others” instead of being itemized.
For Ridon, however, social media is not the place to settle such serious allegations. He stressed that the proper venue is the impeachment process itself, whether in the House or, if the case progresses, in the Senate.
"See you with the Vice President at the last House impeachment hearing, or at the Senate impeachment trial," Ridon said.
"Doon tayo magtutuos," he added.
The House Committee on Justice is set to hold its final hearing on April 29, where the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will present findings on its probe into alleged death threats Duterte made against Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former Speaker of the House Ferdinand Martin Romualdez.
Lawmakers will also vote that day on whether there is probable cause for each allegation—an outcome that could determine if the impeachment case moves to a full trial in the Senate.
