Safety First: New Kamuning Footbridge Opens To Replace Infamous 'Mt. Kamuning'

A major commuter improvement has opened in Quezon City with the unveiling of the newly constructed footbridge and pedestrian access at the Kamuning station of the EDSA Busway, replacing the old structure widely known among commuters as “Mt. Kamuning.”

Background

For years, pedestrians crossing EDSA near Kamuning — a key transfer point between the EDSA Busway and the MRT‑3 GMA‑Kamuning Station — had to use a towering footbridge. Its steep steps and height drew criticism for being inaccessible and unsafe, especially for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and commuters carrying heavy bags.

Following these concerns, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. ordered the construction of a more commuter-friendly footbridge. The project reportedly began in late 2025 and was completed in early 2026.

What’s New for Commuters

The new footbridge and station upgrade offer several improvements: gentler stairs and lower elevation for easier pedestrian access; elevators and wheelchair lifts for commuters who cannot use stairs; improved lighting and clear directional signage; and enhanced connectivity between the footbridge, EDSA Busway station, and surrounding transport network.

The project was completed ahead of schedule, in approximately four months.

Why It Matters

The combined EDSA Busway and MRT network serves hundreds of thousands of commuters daily, with around 750,000 passengers reportedly using the system each day. Improved pedestrian infrastructure at Kamuning significantly enhances safety and accessibility.

This project is part of the government’s broader effort to modernize the EDSA transport corridor, providing safer, more inclusive, and commuter-friendly facilities for Metro Manila residents.
