The House of Representatives is stepping up its support for communities affected by the powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off the coast of Sarangani last week, with lawmakers staying in close contact with local officials to determine what assistance is needed.

House Majority Leader Sandro Marcos said the House leadership is maintaining constant communication with representatives from the affected districts as recovery and damage assessment efforts continue across Mindanao.

“We are in constant communication with all of those affected to make sure that the leadership gives everything that it can sa ating mga kababayan na apektado,” Marcos said in an ambush interview on Wednesday.

According to Marcos, the type of assistance to be provided will depend on the needs identified by local government units and affected residents.

“Whether it be MAIP or medical assistance, whether it be relief goods, whether it be anything that the House can provide,” he said.

Marcos also noted that Speaker Faustino Dy III had already traveled to General Santos City and Sarangani province to personally assess the situation and coordinate with local leaders.

During the visit, Dy inspected several critical facilities, including the General Santos International Airport, and discussed response measures with local officials. The Speaker's trip formed part of the House leadership’s continuing efforts to ensure that affected communities receive immediate support.

The strong offshore earthquake triggered tsunami warnings and was felt across several parts of Mindanao, prompting evacuations and extensive inspections of buildings and infrastructure. Authorities have since been conducting damage assessments while emergency response teams continue to monitor affected areas.

Marcos said the House remains ready to provide additional aid as communities begin rebuilding and recovering from the disaster.

“We are in constant communication with all of those affected,” he reiterated.

Government agencies, local governments, and lawmakers have continued to coordinate relief operations in the wake of one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the region in recent years, with authorities emphasizing the need for sustained support as affected families work to return to normalcy.
