Vice President Sara Duterte said Tuesday that the people who gathered along EDSA reflect what she described as growing public dissatisfaction with the Marcos administration, citing concerns over the economy, governance, and freedom of expression.
In a statement released on June 30, Duterte said the sentiments expressed during the gathering are the same concerns she has consistently raised since 2024.
“The people gathered in EDSA today reflect a growing sentiment that I have consistently expressed since 2024.”
The Vice President criticized the administration's handling of the country's challenges, saying many Filipinos continue to struggle with rising prices, job insecurity, and the increasing cost of living while, according to her, the government has failed to adequately address these issues.
She also accused the administration of using legal action to silence critics instead of responding to public concerns, claiming this has raised questions about freedom of expression, democratic accountability, and the space for legitimate political dissent.
Duterte further argued that the government's response to criticism has contributed to what she described as a more oppressive political environment.
“This is no longer a matter of politics. It is a matter of the honor of the State and a future of a people who continue to bear the weight of economic hardship while their voices are increasingly met with repression.”
