The Supreme Court of the Philippines has directed Malacañang to respond to a petition seeking to compel President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to undergo physical and mental examinations, including a hair follicle drug test.

In a session held on April 22, 2026, the high court acted on G.R. No. E-05860, a petition for a writ of mandamus filed by former House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez along with co-petitioners Virgilio Garcia, Juan Raña, and Raymundo Junia.

The Court ordered respondents — President Marcos and Ralph Recto, in his capacity as Acting Executive Secretary — to submit their comment within ten days from receipt of notice.

The petition asks the Court to require the President to undergo medical and psychological examinations to determine his fitness to lead, as well as a hair follicle drug test. It also seeks to compel the disclosure and publication of the results, including clinical confirmation of the President’s physical and mental capacity to perform his duties.

The Supreme Court’s directive does not yet resolve the merits of the case but signals the start of formal proceedings, giving the respondents the opportunity to address the allegations raised in the petition.
