Senate Minority Bloc Backs Gatchalian For Senate Presidency, Says Pangilinan

Senator Francis Pangilinan said the Senate Minority Bloc is united in supporting Senator Sherwin Gatchalian for the Senate presidency, citing his leadership and strong stance on protecting public funds.
In a statement, Pangilinan said Gatchalian proved himself during the deliberations of the proposed 2026 national budget, where he demonstrated the ability to safeguard government funds and ensure that public money is directed toward programs and sectors that need it most.
According to Pangilinan, Gatchalian possesses the qualities needed to lead the chamber, describing him as principled, capable, firm, and fair.
He also pointed out that beyond leadership qualities, Gatchalian could help unite a broader group of lawmakers who are pushing for reforms in the Senate. Pangilinan said this could pave the way for a more balanced and accountable upper chamber that may also gain support from some members of the current majority bloc.
Pangilinan added that even current Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano had reportedly expressed openness to voting for Gatchalian as the next Senate president.
