Speaker of the House Faustino Dy III has called on Filipinos to remain vigilant and work together following the powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Sarangani province, triggering tsunami warnings and causing strong tremors across several parts of Mindanao.
Expressing concern for residents in affected communities, Dy urged those living in coastal and low-lying areas to strictly follow evacuation orders and safety advisories issued by authorities.
“Our foremost concern at this time is the safety and well-being of our fellow Filipinos in Mindanao,” Dy said, stressing the importance of prioritizing the safety of families and immediately evacuating when instructed by local officials.
The Speaker also appealed to local government units, disaster response teams, uniformed personnel, volunteers, and community leaders to coordinate closely to ensure orderly evacuations and the prompt delivery of assistance to affected residents.
According to Dy, strong cooperation among government agencies and communities is crucial during emergencies to guarantee an effective and organized response.
His appeal came as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned that tsunami waves exceeding one meter above normal tide levels could impact several coastal provinces, including Sarangani, Davao Occidental, Tawi-Tawi, Sulu, Basilan, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, Sultan Kudarat, and South Cotabato. Authorities have also cautioned the public about possible aftershocks and additional damage following the earthquake.
Dy welcomed the immediate directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordering government agencies to mobilize and respond to the situation, saying a coordinated whole-of-government approach is essential to ensure that rescue, relief, and recovery efforts reach affected communities as quickly as possible.
He also assured residents that the House of Representatives is prepared to support emergency response and rehabilitation initiatives, including measures that may be needed to assist families, local governments, and sectors affected by the disaster.
“The House of Representatives stands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Mindanao,” Dy said, emphasizing that the priority remains the safety of every Filipino and the immediate delivery of assistance to those in need.
The Speaker likewise urged the public to remain calm, monitor official announcements, and avoid sharing unverified information that could create confusion or unnecessary panic during the ongoing response efforts.
