Speaker Dy Leads All-Hands House Push To Tackle Fuel Crisis Head-On

It’s all systems go at the House of Representatives—and this time, the focus is clear: easing the burden of rising fuel costs on Filipinos.
At the center of it all is Speaker of the House Faustino Dy III, who has mobilized no less than 13 key committees for a high-level joint hearing on Wednesday, April 8. The goal? Fast-track both immediate relief and long-term solutions as global oil prices continue to surge amid tensions in the Middle East.
The hearing, set at the People’s Center Building, marks a coordinated and aggressive response from lawmakers. Dy has instructed the committees to work as one—consolidating data, coordinating closely with the Executive branch, and producing concrete policy actions that can cushion the impact on ordinary Filipinos.
Facilitating the session is Cong. Quimbo, who chairs the Committee on Ways and Means. He described the initiative as a critical step in aligning legislative measures with the government’s broader strategy to respond to the global fuel shock.
And this isn’t just a small meeting. A powerhouse lineup of committee heads is joining the effort, including Jose Alvarez (Energy), Mark Enverga (Agriculture), and Ramon Revilla III (Labor), among others—each bringing their sector’s perspective into the discussion.
The agenda covers more than just fuel prices. Lawmakers are expected to dig into the country’s overall oil and energy supply situation, especially with ongoing tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. They’ll also assess the broader economic impact and explore what more can be done moving forward.
To make the discussions more grounded, several Cabinet officials and economic managers have been invited to present updates and policy options. Among them are Energy Sec. Sharon Garin, Finance Sec. Frederick Go, and Planning Sec. Arsenio Balisacan, along with representatives from key agencies like the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and even global institutions such as the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.
For Quimbo, the objective is simple but urgent: gather the right data, align efforts across government, and roll out solutions that can immediately help the most vulnerable sectors.
But beyond short-term fixes, the House is also looking at the bigger picture—exploring structural reforms that could reduce the country’s dependence on volatile global oil markets.
