Tab Baldwin, Epok Quimpo Exit Ateneo
FILE
The Ateneo Blue Eagles are entering a new era after both head coach Tab Baldwin and team manager Epok Quimpo stepped down from their positions, marking a significant shake-up within one of the country's most prominent collegiate basketball programs.
Ateneo de Manila University President Fr. Roberto Yap announced on June 15 that the university had accepted the resignations of Baldwin and Quimpo, effective immediately, as the institution begins a comprehensive review of its athletic programs and safety protocols.
The leadership changes come in the wake of the deaths of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili in Dipaculao, Aurora, an incident that has prompted multiple investigations and calls for accountability.
In a statement, the university thanked Baldwin for his years of service while emphasizing the need for organizational changes moving forward.
"We thank him for the years of service to the Blue Eagles. But as we enter a period of deep institutional review, a change in leadership is necessary to ensure the full integrity of our sports programs and safety protocols governing them.
We must look inward, examine our systems, and rebuild the structures of our athletic programs so that our fields and playing courts will be places where dreams are nurtured, not broken."
Baldwin leaves behind a decorated legacy with Ateneo, having guided the Blue Eagles through multiple successful UAAP campaigns and helping establish the program as one of the league's perennial contenders. Quimpo, meanwhile, played a key role behind the scenes as team manager throughout much of the program's recent success.
Prior to their resignations, both Baldwin and Quimpo had been placed on leave as investigations into the June 8 tragedy continued.
With the departures of both the head coach and team manager, Ateneo now faces the challenge of rebuilding its leadership structure while conducting what it describes as a thorough review of its athletic operations, safety standards, and institutional processes.
The university has yet to announce replacements for either position.
