U.S. President Donald Trump spoke out following a tense security incident near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, describing both the danger of the moment and the swift response that prevented a far worse outcome.

In his statement, Trump said the gathering—traditionally meant to celebrate press freedom and bring together political leaders and media figures from across party lines—unexpectedly became a moment of unity in the face of a real threat. He noted that despite the chaos, there was a shared sense of solidarity inside the room.

According to Trump, an armed individual attempted to breach a security checkpoint near the event, carrying multiple weapons. The suspect was quickly confronted and taken down by members of the United States Secret Service, whom he praised for their speed and bravery.

To ensure transparency, Trump said he ordered the release of footage showing both the suspect’s actions and the rapid response by authorities. The video, he noted, highlights what he described as an attack not just on people at the event, but on democratic institutions.

One law enforcement officer was shot during the incident, but Trump said the officer survived thanks to a bulletproof vest that absorbed the impact of a close-range shot from a high-powered firearm. He added that he personally spoke with the officer, who is now in stable condition and in high spirits.

Trump ended his remarks by commending law enforcement for what he called an effective and courageous response, emphasizing that their actions helped protect lives and maintain order during a potentially tragic situation.
