Senator Erwin Tulfo has appealed for unity among his fellow lawmakers following days of tension and sharp exchanges inside the Senate that disrupted legislative work and exposed divisions within the chamber.
In a statement released by his office, Tulfo acknowledged that emotions had run high during recent confrontations involving several senators, including the dispute surrounding Senator Alan Peter Cayetano. He apologized to his colleagues for his harsh remarks and admitted that his words and actions did not reflect the conduct expected of a senator.
The senator also sought forgiveness from the public, saying Filipinos were the ones who suffered as political disagreements led to stalled proceedings and delayed discussions on important measures.
Tulfo called on his fellow senators to set aside personal differences and focus on their responsibilities to the people. He urged members of the chamber to stop the infighting and instead prioritize legislation, investigations into irregularities, and measures that protect the welfare of Filipinos.
His appeal came after weeks of political turmoil in the Senate triggered by disputes over leadership and committee assignments following the opening of the 20th Congress. Tensions escalated further after several senators clashed during sessions and committee hearings, with accusations and heated exchanges spilling into public view.
The Senate recently faced a major divide after a new majority bloc emerged, resulting in changes in committee chairmanships and sparking disagreements among some lawmakers. The leadership changes have drawn attention from Malacañang, which recognized the new Senate majority and leadership, while several senators called for stability and cooperation within the institution.
Amid the controversy, Tulfo emphasized that disagreements among senators should not hinder the chamber from carrying out its mandate. He said differences in opinion do not mean turning away from the country, but should instead serve as a source of strength in protecting the interests of the Filipino people.
He also appealed for senators to put aside personal interests and work together to restore the integrity and dignity of the Senate, saying the nation stands to benefit when lawmakers choose cooperation over conflict.
The senator's statement comes as lawmakers prepare to tackle priority measures and conduct investigations on various national issues, with many observers urging the Senate to move past political divisions and refocus on governance.
