Typhoon Inday maintained its strength on Thursday afternoon as it continued moving west northwest over the Philippine Sea east of Northern Luzon, prompting PAGASA to keep Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals (TCWS) in several parts of Luzon.
In its 5 p.m. bulletin, the state weather bureau said the eye of the typhoon was located about 780 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan, packing maximum sustained winds of 165 kilometers per hour, gusts reaching 205 kph, and moving west northwest at 20 kph.
TCWS No. 2 remains in effect over Batanes, the eastern portion of the Babuyan Islands, and the northeastern tip of Santa Ana, Cagayan, where gale-force winds are expected within the next 24 hours. These areas may experience minor to moderate impacts on life and property.
Meanwhile, TCWS No. 1 is still up over the rest of Cagayan, Isabela, Apayao, Kalinga, parts of Abra, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Ilocos Norte, northern Aurora, and northern and central Catanduanes, where strong winds may begin within the next 36 hours.
Aside from strong winds, PAGASA warned that Typhoon Inday, combined with the enhanced southwest monsoon or habagat, will continue to bring heavy rains and gusty conditions across much of the country through Saturday, July 11.
Sea conditions are also expected to remain dangerous. Very rough to rough seas, with waves reaching as high as 7 meters, are forecast over the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon, while rough to moderate seas will affect several coastal areas in the Visayas and Mindanao.
PAGASA advised all mariners, especially those operating small boats and motor bancas, to avoid venturing out to sea. Larger vessels sailing in areas under gale warning were also urged to seek shelter until weather conditions improve.
Based on the latest forecast, Inday is expected to continue moving northwest while remaining over the Philippine Sea. It may pass closest to Extreme Northern Luzon between Friday evening and early Saturday before heading toward the southern islands of Japan. The typhoon could also pass near or make landfall over northern Taiwan before exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday.
After leaving the country, Inday is forecast to make landfall along the eastern coast of mainland China, where it is expected to gradually weaken into a severe tropical storm.
PAGASA urged residents in areas vulnerable to flooding, landslides, and strong winds to remain alert, monitor the latest weather advisories, and follow evacuation orders and other instructions from local authorities if necessary.
